Effective Communication & Professional Boundaries for Psychologists
How to set boundaries and talk to clients
Do you struggle with communicating boundaries, policies and procedures, or expectations for clients and stakeholders? Do you like to have frameworks and scripts for difficult conversations? Are you a 4+2 or 5+1 provisional psychologist looking for PD to support your communications competencies?
If you answered yes to any of these, this course is for you.
Sound familiar?
You are not alone!
This is common in early career and when moving to private practice settings
You’re experiencing this problem because…
01. We are not taught to communicate within a business during uni
Psychologists are trained heavily in how to communicate therapeutically, but we are not taught how to communicate around business practices, procedures or policies. Therapeutic communication is collaborative and can involve more compromise than is appropriate in business processes leaving psychologists prone to having flexible workplace boundaries.
02. We self-sacrifice and relax boundaries to preserve rapport
Rapport is important in therapy, it’s the biggest indicator of outcomes, however, rapport goes both ways and isn’t just about the client liking us. Rapport is jeopardised when we don’t have appropriate boundaries because it can lead to resentment and frustration. Modelling appropriate boundary setting is important in therapy.
03. You don’t know which boundaries are necessary or appropriate
We typically learn about our boundaries as we go, or as taught by others. In early career or when transitioning from an employment environment with strict policy and procedure it can be difficult to identify appropriate boundaries, OR difficult to understand why some of these were necessary.
